How to inspect used trucksbefore shipment.
A used truck is only as good as its inspection. A clear checklist, agreed before payment and carried out before loading, protects the buyer and gives the seller a fair, documented basis for the deal.
The checklist
What to check, and how.
| Area | What to check | Evidence to request |
|---|---|---|
| Identity and documents | VIN or chassis number matches the papers, ownership and export registration | Title or registration, export certificate |
| Engine | Starting, smoke, leaks, noise, oil condition, engine hours or mileage | Video of cold start, service history |
| Gearbox and drivetrain | Gear changes, clutch, differentials, prop shafts | Road test report |
| Chassis and frame | Cracks, welds, corrosion, previous repairs | Photos of frame rails |
| Axles and suspension | Leaks, wear, play, air or leaf suspension condition | Inspection report |
| Brakes | Lining wear, air system, parking brake | Brake test result |
| Tyres | Tread depth, matching sizes, age, damage | Photos of each tyre |
| Cab and electrics | Dashboard warnings, lights, air conditioning, glass | Photos and video |
| Emission standard | Euro class stated in the papers | Registration or conformity document |
Before loading
Rules at the destination.
| Point | Why it matters | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Age limits | Many countries limit the age of imported vehicles | Check the rule before you buy |
| Left or right hand drive | Some markets restrict one or the other | Confirm before purchase |
| Roadworthiness or conformity certificate | Required by some destinations before shipment | Book the inspection in time |
| Cleanliness and biosecurity | Some destinations require washed, soil-free vehicles | Wash and certify before loading |
